Sheffield United Football CLub

As one of the largest clubs in Yorkshire, Sheffield United gives off an air of belonging in the top division. However, this hasn’t always been the case. While they have spent more years in the top flight than any other division, they are no strangers to the lower leagues, even having spent a year in the fourth tier during the 1981-82 season.

This inconsistency goes some way towards explaining how while there’s no shortage of club legends, few of the game’s all-time greats have called Bramall Lane home. One name that springs to mind is Brian Deane, who made 223 appearances across three spells, scoring 93 goals. However, he played only one season in the top division, and his skills only amounted to three England caps.

Sheffield United were founder members of the Premier League but remained there for only two seasons in their first stint. They were, however, the first team to relegate a rival from the top division, beating Nottingham Forest 2-0 on 1 May 1993.
