Reece James has recently opened up on his relationship with England and Chelsea legend, Ashley Cole.

Reece James’ 2020/21

When Thomas Tuchel first took the reins at Chelsea we did see Reece James fall down the pecking order slightly.

This came with Tuchel switching to a back five and moving Cesar Azpilicueta to the right centre-back spot and then deploying Callum Hudson-Odoi in a right-wing-back role.

However, James would regain his starting spot for the Blues, first in a RWB role and then, at the end of the campaign, as a right-sided centre-back in a three.

James would be used in this spot in the Champions League final and performed very well.

James & Ashley Cole

James has now linked up with the England squad and is no doubt hoping to be a regular feature at Euro 2020.

James is competing with some top players for that right-back spot, though, with Kyle Walker, like James, also capable of being used as a RCB in a back-three.

Ahead of the tournament, James has been discussing the relationship he has with Ashley Cole.

Cole is one of the best full-backs in Chelsea history and also enjoyed a decent spell with England.

And now, the former Chelsea man appears to be aiming to pass his years of knowledge onto James, with the youngster confirming in an interview that he speaks to Cole nearly every week:

“When I was young I wasn’t always a right back. I was a striker. But I’ve always looked up to Frank Lampard because he played for the club I supported, Ashley Cole similar. So I’ve always supported the boys who played for the team I supported.

“[With Cole], we speak nearly every week. Probably one of the best left-backs to play the game. Even though he was a left-back the position is basically the same, just on the opposite side. He helps me a lot progressing.”
